Webdesign for Beginners

This post is aimed at my mate John who’s just recently start his own website, but it should apply to all newcomers and anyone thinking of setting up a website. You can see his site here.
Like most beginners, he’s using free hosting from his internet ISP, and he’s also using their free tools. This is a great way to start: not only is it risk free but it’s also simple to set up by using the tools.
Well here’s a simple guide that I hope will help all you budding webdesigners..!

First lets get over the basics:
Domain - Commonly know as a webaddress, every site must have one! ebay.co.uk, amazon.com and google.co.uk are all examles I expect you recognise. Mine cost £5 but you can pay from £0 to £millions.
Webserver - this is where you store your files that your visitors will see, basicly a computer that’s attached to the internet. Again, I only pay £5 but you can pay from £0 to £millions depending on your requirements.
Host - the company who provide your webserver
HTML - This is a computer language, most websites are written using it, including mine.
FTP - When designing your webpages there are two ways you can go.. 1. you can use an online utility provided by your host (often quite basic and limited) or you can edit them on your own computer and upload (publish) them later. This later method will almost certainly require an FTP client, this is computer software that uploads your files to your webserver.
Browser - I’m sure you’ve all heard this term before, it’s what you look at the internet with. Many people (60% on my site) use Internet Explorer, but that figure is dropping in favour of Firefox. Either way, it shouldn’t matter too much at the moment but I thought I’d explain the term.

Well that took longer than I thought to explain, so I’ll have to write some more another day.
