Today you will find a new category on the site: Home. This new category is witness to the fact we now have a how of our own, rather than one we rent. The Moving House category will now fade away, ready to begin again when we next move house (not for a while I hope!).

Collins Complete DIY ManualAs we prepare to move house we decided it would be a good idea to buy a diy book, one that we know will help us fit boilers etc.
Well we bought a diy book like that for someone for Christmas and as it turned out to be so good we just bought ourselves the same.
I can heartily recommend “Collins Complete DIY Manual” as the diy book of choice. Everything is explained fully and simply.

After a number of delays we’ve finally agreed a date with the vendor that we will collect the keys!
The big day is the 26th April. After that we have until the Saturday to move in and hand our current home back to the letting agency.

Now we just need some boxes!

U.K. budget targets first-time homebuyers with tax move
It goes without saying that this is great news for us! I almost cheered when I heard the news on the radio that the stamp duty threshold would be raised from £60,000 to £120,000.
This comes into force tomorrow and since we haven’t actually bought the house yet this will affect us. If all had gone to plan we may have been moved in by now, so maybe the delays arranging the mortgage have been worth it ;-)

House Update: Mortgage Approved!

I just had a phone call from our lender (mortgage provider) and it seems that our mortgage has been approved! :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-)
They have to double check everything and then we’ll have a letter in the post. This means that as long as there are no other issues then we have to meet with our solicitor to exchange contracts (sign) and that will leave us open to complete the sale.
This is quite a leap forward for us, as we’ve been waiting for the lender to approve our mortgage application for ages now.

Guardian Unlimited | The Guardian | Property market is stabilising reports Halifax
The property market appeared to be stabilising today after new figures from mortgage lender Halifax pointed to a “gradual slowdown” in price inflation.
The bank said that house prices had fallen by 0.5% in February, following rises in December and January. The average price of a property was now £162,816, and prices have risen by just 0.8% since July last year.

This report from the Halifax seems to suggest that perhaps we’re not buying at the best time… oh well! It all comes out in the wash.
