When fitting 1600 and 1800 engines to the GTM Libra from donor cars like the MGF or 200 Series, it is nec-essary to fit the Rover Metro alarm system using a |5 AS unit. The engines will not run without this alarm unit fitted. When buying a second hand unit it is best if at the same time you can purchase the 5 AS unit and key fobs that operate-it from the same car.

It is possible to use new or other 5 AS units but you will have to take the car to Austin Rover to have the system aligned. GTM Cars make a special adapter loom that joins into the standard GTM loom and enables you to fit the 5 AS unit with a small neon light on the dashboard.

Assembly

The 5AS unit mounts inside the dashboard area to keep it away from moisture. It mounts on the passenger side behind the glove box area. Mount the 5AS unit on the vertical face to the outside of the main wiring loom grommet. This area is only single skimmed so fix a piece of half inch ply to the surface using filler and then self tap the 5AS unit to the ply. The wiring loom runs through a grommet adjacent to the main wiring loom grommet.

The wiring loom runs from the 5 AS unit through the tunnel in a similar manner to the original GTM loom and back to point where the original GTM loom terminates. The neon light runs through an existing grommet into the dashboard area and is positioned into the dashboard by drilling a suitable hole and pushing through from the rear.

At the rear of the car the 5 AS unit wiring loom jacks into the original GTM loom and the other connectors connect to the standard engine bay wiring loom from the donor car. At the rear of this manual a diagram is enclosed to indicate the colours to be connected on the 5 AS loom to the engine bay loom on various donor engines.
