Summary

To resolve the problem of loose roof balls it is possible to replace the fixing with something more robust, and possibly better looking.

Method

Parts

  • The new catch used is typically available from cycle shops and is the type used to secure cycle seat posts and wheels. A wide variety is available but most are suited to a M4 bolt.
  • A washer can be used between the catch and the roof to prvent damage.

Tools

If you have a M4 type catch you will need to tap it to an M6, as that is the size of the roof bolt. If you're lucky enough to have a M6 type catch

  • M6 tap
  • M5 drill bit
  • Sandpaper/Angle grinder

Do It!

  1. Drill out the existing M4 thread to M5, then use the tap to make a new thread.
  2. The new bolt most likely won't fit between the lobes of the catch, so sand or grind it out until the bolt now slide between the lobes
  3. Depending on the 'closed' position of the catch you may with to reprofile the lobes slightly so that it 'locks'
